I Fixed My Website (By Taking Things Out)
By Eugene Puckfarkner ยท
Friends,
My website is a flip phone now. I mean that as a compliment.
It used to be built like one of those phones that does everything. It had a whole back room of machinery just to fetch my two blog posts. Every time someone opened the blog, that machinery had to go get the posts from somewhere else first.
Now it is just pages. You ask for a page, you get the page. Like my flip phone, it does one job.
Here is what did not change. Every plan, every post and every picture is still here. If you saved a link to one of my old posts, it still takes you to the right place.
Here is what did change. There is nothing to log into anymore. Some of you will remember my first post, where I spent forty-five minutes figuring out how to log into the website. Problem solved. Not by learning. By taking out the door.
We also took down the sign-up form at the bottom of the page. It turns out it never sent your name anywhere. If you filled it in, I beg your pardon. A momentary lapse of reason.
That is the whole idea, by the way. I keep saying government has too many moving parts. It seemed only fair to start with my own.
Take out what is not doing a job. It worked for my website. It can work for Washington.
Less is more. Forsooth!
Your friend, Eugene
P.S. The new website does not serve pizza either. I checked.
